HB 2556 establishes a motorcycle safety fund which is subject to legislative appropriation.
Summary of the proposed strike everything amendment to HB 2556
The strike everything amendment exempts school buses from covering markings indicating that the vehicle is a school bus if any of the following conditions apply: (a) the bus is being driven to or from school for school sponsored academic activities, (b) the school bus is being driven to or from school for school sponsored vocational and technological education, (c) the school bus is being driven to or from school for school sponsored athletic trips or extracurricular activities.
Current statute defines a school bus as a vehicle that is designed for carrying more than ten passengers and that is either: (a) owned by any public or government agency or other institution and operated for the transportation of children to or from home or school on a regular scheduled basis. (b) Privately owned and operated for compensation for the transportation of children to or from home or school on a regularly scheduled basis.
Current statute also states that a bus used for the transportation of school children shall have on the front and rear of the bus a plainly visible sign containing the words “school bus” in letters not less than eight inches in height. If a school bus is operated on a highway for a purpose other than the actual transportation of children either to or from school, all markings indicating “school bus” shall be covered or concealed.
· Exempts school buses from covering markings indicating the vehicle is a school bus if any of the following conditions apply:
1. A school bus is being driven to or from school sponsored academic activities.
2. A school bus is being driven to or from school sponsored vocational and technological education.
3. A school bus is being driven to or from school sponsored athletic trips or school sponsored extracurricular activities.
