SCR 1005 designates Cold War Victory Day be commemorated in Arizona on May 1st and directs a copy of the resolution be transmitted to the Cold War Veterans Association.

 

History

The Cold War Veterans Association (CWVA) was established in Kansas on November 20, 2001, and as a federally recognized veteran’s service organization on January 7, 2002. Membership is open to honorably discharged veterans and active-duty personnel who served during the Cold War.

 

The goals of the association are to fight for the rights of Cold War Veterans, to educate people as to why the Cold War was fought and won and why vigilance must be maintained, and to provide a fraternal community for men and women whose patriotism binds them together.

 

Provisions

·        Proclaims May 1st as Cold War Victory Day in Arizona.

·        Outlines the history of  the Cold War and surrounding events as follows:

·          Lasted from September 2, 1945 until December 26, 1991

·          Began after World War II with the threat of communist domination of the world

·          Was the longest undeclared war in US history

·          Involved tens of thousands of Arizona veterans

·          Ended with the collapse of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and with the collapse of the Soviet Union’s communist government in December 1991

§         International confrontations and crises included:

·          The Berlin Airlift in 1948 and 1949

·          The Korean War in 1950 through 1953

·          The Cuban missile crisis of 1962

·          The Vietnam War from 1964 until 1973

§         Identifies the Kansas-based Cold War Veterans Association as having made May 1st the day to commemorate our victory in the Cold War.

·        Directs the Secretary of State to transmit a copy of the resolution to the Cold War Veterans Association.
