ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Phoenix, Arizona

REVISED

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1259

health professionals; inactive military status

Purpose

Requires all health profession regulatory boards to waive the licensure or certification renewal fee for a health professional who is called to active duty as a member of a specified military reserve category.

Background

Members of certain military reserve categories who are licensed or certified to practice in Arizona may be transferred anywhere in the world when called to active duty. However, many health profession regulatory boards require these professionals to continue paying licensure or certification renewal fees regardless of where the professionals serve. S.B. 1259 requires health profession regulatory boards to waive the licensure or certification renewal fees for health professionals who are members of a specified military reserve category if they are called to active duty when the fees are due.

Due to the provisions of this bill, some health profession regulatory boards may experience a loss of revenue; however, this amount is indiscernible because the number of affected health professionals regulated by each board is unknown.

Provisions

1.      Requires each health profession regulatory board to waive the certification or licensure renewal fee for a health professional who is a member of a specified military reserve category if the professional is called to active duty when the fee is due.

2.      Provides for a general effective date.

Amendments Adopted by Committee

1.      Specifies the waived fees are renewal fees.

2.      Specifies the waiver applies only if the professional is called to active duty when the fee is due.

3.      Makes technical changes to the specified military reserve categories.
