SB 1200 establishes the trafficking victims’ task force to research and make recommendations to combat the trafficking of victims.

 

History

The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 (22 United States Code Section 7102) defines trafficking as the obtaining of a person through force, fraud or coercion for the use of involuntary services. The United States Congress created this act in an attempt to combat trafficking and help victims of trafficking. The United States Congress estimated in the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act that 700,000 people are trafficked annually, of which approximately 50,000 are coming into the United States each year.

 

Provisions

·          Establishes the trafficking victims’ task force and its members.

 

§         Requires the task force to select a chairperson, meet annually and at the call of the chairperson and complete the following:

  1. Research the trafficking of victims and the current approaches at combating it.
  2. Evaluate the current approaches at increasing public awareness of the trafficking of victims.
  3. Research the services and facilities currently provided to victims of trafficking.
  4. Develop a plan to combat the trafficking of victims.
  5. Make recommendations to coordinate support services.
  6. Submit an annual report with their findings and recommendations on or before December 31.

 

·          Stipulates that members of the task force may receive reimbursements of expenses but not compensations.

 

·          Defines victim as a person subject to acts or practices of trafficking.
