HB 2484 allows school districts and charter schools operating on an approved alternative calendar to count pupils as having attended full time if the pupil was enrolled in and physically attended at least 20 hours of instruction for the week. Additionally, requires alternative schools and charter schools to meet the annual hours of instruction pursuant to statute, and revises the definition of full-time instructional program.

History

Current statute allows school districts and charter schools to operate on an approved alternative calendar. Funding for alternative calendars, as with traditional calendars, is based upon the attendance of pupils and is formula driven.

Provisions

· Allows school districts and charter schools operating on an approved alternative calendar the authority to count pupils as having attended full time in any week for which the pupil was enrolled in and physically attended at least 20 hours of instruction that week.

· Requires alternative schools and charter schools to meet the minimum annual hours of instruction pursuant to statute.

· Changes the yearly total hour requirement during the minimum number of days required for a full-time instructional program to equal the minimum number of subjects multiplied by the number of school days in the year to at least:

· 704 hours in FY 2001-02.

· 708 hours in FY 2002-03.

· 712 hours in FY 2003-04.

· 716 hours in FY 2004-05.

· 720 hours in FY 2005-06.

· Provides that a full-time instructional program must include at least four subjects taught each school day for the minimum number of days required in a school year. Each subject must meet at least:

· 120 hours a year in FY 2000-01.

· 122 hours a year in FY 2001-02 and FY 2002-03 or the equivalent.

· 123 hours a year in FY 2003-04 and each fiscal year thereafter or the equivalent.

· The equivalent to the above provisions is one or more subjects taught 20 hours per week prorated for any week with fewer than five school days.
