HB 2289 creates the Joint Study Committee on State Funding of the Court System.

 

History

Currently in Arizona, the courts are funded by a combination of state, county, and federal grant monies.  The amount the courts receive from each entity varies.

 

Provisions

§         Establishes the 21-member Joint Study Committee on State Funding of the Court System.

§         Requires the Committee to:

·        Review state funding of the Arizona court system.

·        Make recommendations as to which components of the judicial system should be funded by the state.

·        Recommend a plan for state funding of the judicial system including the time period for implementation and the source of revenues for increased state responsibilities.

·        Develop a plan for the implementation of a statewide indigent defense office.

§         Mandates that the staff of the County Supervisors Association and the Administrative Office of the Courts provide technical assistance to the committee.

§         Requires the Committee to submit a report to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Association of County Supervisors and the Arizona League of Cities and Towns by June 30, 2003.

§         Requires the committee to provide copies of the report to the Secretary of State and the director of the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.

§         Contains a delayed repeal date of January 1, 2004.
