HB 2238 requires that the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) shall issue Navajo Nation special license plates.

 

Current status

HB 2238 passed the Native American Affairs Committee unamended.  HB 2238 was amended in the Transportation Committee to stipulate that the Navajo Nation pay ADOT for plate production  and implementation costs.

 

Provisions

·                      Requires that the Department of Motor Vehicles (MVD) issue Navajo nation special plates by January 1, 2003.

·                      Specifies that of the $25 fee, eight dollars is a special plate administration fee and seventeen dollars is an annual donation.

·                      Stipulates that MVD shall deposit all special plate administration fees into the state highway fund and all of the donations to the Navajo Nation Department of Highway Safety.

·                      Authorizes the Navajo nation to use these monies only for traffic control devices for highways on the reservation.

·                      Makes technical and conforming changes.

 

Amendments

HB 2238 was amended in the Transportation Committee as follows:

·        Stipulates that the Navajo Nation, by June 30, 2003, pay ADOT $32,000 for plate production and implementation costs.
