As Passed the House

HB 2150 gives law enforcement officials the ability to obtain regular alternative plates in cases where an alternative fuel vehicle is used in an undercover capacity.

Current Status

HB 2150 passed the Transportation Committee unamended.

History

The Motor Vehicle Division Office of Special Investigations issues undercover plates to law enforcement agencies and federal government for use in the line of duty to investigate actual or suspected violations of law. In order to obtain undercover plates these agencies must submit a letter of authorization from their governing body i.e. County/Board of Supervisors; State/Governor; etc.  These plates are issued at no fee, as they are issued to a political subdivision.  Currently, MVD does not have statutory authority to issue alternative fuel plates to undercover vehicles, therefore, they are issued standard desertscape plates.  This causes those type of vehicles to be readily identified..

Provisions

·          Allows the Department of Transportation to issue regular alternative fuel vehicle special plates for vehicles that are used by law enforcement and the federal government.
