HB 2055 establishes the Indian Education Advisory Board (Board) with the purpose of studying issues regarding the academic performance of Native American students.

Current Status

HB 2055 passed the Native American Affairs Committee unamended.

Provisions

· Establishes the Indian Education Advisory Board consisting of the following members:

· The superintendent of public instruction.

· The Speaker of the House, or designee, and the President of the Senate, or designee.

· The chairperson of the House Education Committee and the chairperson of the Senate Education Committee.

· A Speaker appointed member of the House who is not a member of the same political party as the chairman of the House Education Committee and who is a member of one of the 21 recognized Indian nations.

· A Senate President appointed member of the Senate who is not a member of the same political party as the chairman of the Senate Education Committee and who is a member of one of the 21 recognized Indian nations.

· One superintendent, appointed by the superintendent of public instruction, of a school district within this state that is located in whole, or in part, within one of the 21 recognized Indian nations.

· A person appointed by the Speaker of the House who represents a college or university and has a demonstrated interest in the education of Native American children.

· A person appointed by the President of the Senate who represents a college or university and has a demonstrated interest in the education of Native American children.

· A person appointed by the Speaker of the House who represents an alternative education program and has a demonstrated interest in the education of Native American children.

· A person appointed by the President of the Senate who represents charter schools and has a demonstrated interest in the education of Native American children.

· Limits the term of appointed members to two years.

· Authorizes the board to conduct hearings, study issues and propose changes regarding the academic performance of Native American students.

· Requires the Board to report its findings and recommendations to the superintendent of public instruction.

· Allows the Board to use the services of the legislative staff and the department of education as needed.

· States that board members are eligible to receive reimbursement of expenses for work related to the Board, pursuant to established guidelines.

· States that the program sunsets on July 1, 2012.
