ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Establish the Indian Education Advisory Board to
study issues regarding the academic performance of Native American students.
In Arizona there are
twenty-one recognized Indian nations.
These Indian Nations are: Ak-Chin, Fort Mojave, Hualapai, Salt River
Pima-Maricopa, White Mountain-Apache, Cocopah, Gila River, Kaibab-Paiute, San
Carlos Apache, Yavapai Apache, Tohono O’Odham Nation, Colorado River,
Havasupai, Pascua Yaqui, Yavapai- Prescott, Navajo Nation, Fort McDowell, Hopi,
Fort Yuma-Quechan, Tonto Apache, and San Juan Southern Paiute.
H.B. 2525 establishes an
Indian Education Advisory Board to study issues relating to the academic
performance of Native American students.
There is an indiscernible
fiscal impact to the state general fund associated with this bill related to
the reimbursement of expenses incurred by task force members.
1. Establishes a 12-member Indian Education Advisory Board and specifies that each member serve a two-year term.
2. Requires the Board to:
(a)
Conduct
hearings and study issues pertaining to the academic performance of Native
American students in Arizona.
(b)
Propose
recommended changes to improve academic performance of Native
American students in Arizona.
3. Requires the Board to submit a written report to the Superintendent of Public Instruction by December 15th annually.
4. Allows the Board to use the services of Legislative staff and the Department of Education staff.
5. Qualifies members for reimbursement of expenses.
6. Repeals the Board on July 1, 2011.
7. Provides for a general effective date.
