FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2486

recreational vehicles; length restrictions

Purpose

Increases the maximum length for motor homes from 40 feet to 45 feet.

Background

Unless otherwise specified, current statute limits any vehicle including the load on the vehicle to 40 feet overall dimension, including front and rear bumpers.  Size and weight standards are applicable throughout the state and are not amendable by local authority. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, 32 states permit over 40-foot motor homes to travel throughout their state.

H.B. 2486 increases the maximum length of recreational vehicles from 40 feet to 45 feet.   This legislation limits recreational vehicles to include a motor home designed to provide temporary living quarters for recreational, camping or travel use and built on or permanently attached to a self-propelled motor vehicle chassis or an a chassis cab or van that is an integral part of the completed vehicle.

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state general fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.      Exempts motor homes that do not exceed 45 feet in length from the 40-foot limit for all vehicles including front and rear bumpers.

2.      Provides for a general effective date.
