ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Phoenix, Arizona
fire fighter cancer insurance
Purpose
Eliminates the requirement
that a fire fighter have five years of credited hazardous duty service in order
to qualify for fire fighter cancer insurance policy coverage.
In 1996, H.B. 2233
established a cancer insurance policy program for Arizona fire fighters who are
members of the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Any political subdivision of the state that
employs fire fighters is required to participate in the program. Current law requires a participant to be an
active or retired member of PSPRS, to be a fire fighter who was or is regularly
assigned to hazardous duty for at least five years as reflected by the years of
credited service on account with the PSPRS fund manager and to have cancer that
was first diagnosed after the person joined PSPRS.
Because employers of fire
fighters cover program costs, there is no fiscal impact to the state.
