ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Phoenix, Arizona
Red Mesa health center
Urges Congress to
appropriate $48 million in FY 2001-2002 to the Indian Health Budget for the
construction of the Red Mesa Health Center.
Since the mid-1980s, the
Navajo Nation began making plans to construct a health center and staff
quarters in Red Mesa, Arizona, on 75 acres of land donated by local land
users. Presently, there are 10,000
people residing in northeastern Arizona that have limited access to health
care. The proposed health center would
provide adult and pediatric medical care, diagnostic and laboratory services,
short stay nursing beds, dental care, physical therapy and 24 hour
emergency care. Currently, residents in
this area must travel an average of 60 miles to the nearest hospital for these
services.
During FY 1999-2000,
Congress appropriated funds to design the Red Mesa health center. The Indian Health Services hired an
architect and construction manager to design and oversee the project. All of the necessary documents are completed
and the proposed site has been withdrawn by the Navajo Nation. H.C.M. 2003 urges Congress to appropriate
$48 million to the Indian Health Budget to complete the Red Mesa Health Center
and staff quarters.
