Appropriates
approximately $1.8 million from the state general fund in FY 2001-2002 to the
Department of Economic Security to fund Navajo Head Start programs.
Head
Start serves children from birth to age five for low-income families. Additionally, Head Start provides services
in education and early childhood development, as well as services for medical,
dental, mental health, nutrition, and parent involvement.
The
Navajo Nation participates in the Head Start Program. The Navajo Nation seeks
to make improvements to Head Start programs on the reservation and is
requesting that the Fort Defiance Head Start Center be converted to an early
childhood facility to serve children from birth to three years old. This center is currently not equipped to
serve children in early childhood development programs. The Navajo Nation is also requesting solid
waste disposal equipment and classroom facilities, which are not currently
funded by the School Facilities Board.

1341 appropriates $1,782,187.20 from the state general fund in FY 2001-2002 to
the Department of Economic Security to fund various Navajo Head Start Programs.
1. Appropriates approximately $1.8 million from the state general fund in FY 2001-2002 to the Department of Economic Security to fund the following Navajo Head Start programs:

for Greasewood Springs playground equipment

for Round Rock double classroom facility

for Fort Defiance playground equipment

for Fort Defiance solid waste disposal equipment

for Fort Defiance early childhood facilities renovation
2. Exempts the appropriation from lapsing.
3. Provides for a general effective date.
