ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Appropriation; Navajo
veterans' services
Appropriates
$3,000,000 in FY 2001-2002 from the state general fund to the Veterans’ Service
Commission for distribution to the Navajo Nations Veterans Trust Fund to be
used for Navajo veterans’ services.
Background
The
Navajo Nation Council established the Navajo Nation Veterans Trust Fund by
resolution in July of 1998. At the same
time, the Council approved $6 million dollars for the fund. The interest earnings from the trust fund
cannot be used until 2004. The Navajo
Nation Council has requested matching appropriations for the fund from the
federal government and Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. The majority of Navajo
veterans and their families have diversified needs related to expenses in the
areas of housing, transportation, medicine, burials, and utilities. The trust fund will be used to help veterans
defray these costs.
