SUBJECT: Strike Everything
Amendment to S.B. 1328
Appropriates $500,000 in FY 2001-2002 from the state general fund to the Office of Tourism for renovation and capital improvements to the former Phoenix Indian School in order to establish a Native American Cultural and Tourism Center.
As part of the Steele Indian School Park, the Arizona American Indian Tourism Association (AAITA) won a bid from the City of Phoenix to renovate the dining hall of the former Phoenix Indian School to establish the Native American Cultural and Tourism Center.
According to AAITA, the Center will be located in the 14,250 square foot dining hall and will offer revolving exhibits and audio visual presentations interpreting Native American history, culture and contemporary society. Additionally there will be guided tours and lectures, traditional dances on weekends and Indian arts and crafts. The City of Phoenix will assume costs for stabilizing the structure and restoring the original finish. AAITA has assumed financial responsibility for renovating the interior of the building and managing the cultural center. The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department will maintain all exterior improvements.
