ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Phoenix, Arizona

FINAL REVISED

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1223

ethics committee; constables

(NOW: county redistricting)

Purpose

An emergency measure that requires county boards of supervisors to set supervisorial district boundaries by December 1 following the release of United States decennial census data.

Background

Last year, H.B. 2416 required county boards of supervisors to meet in the June following the release of U.S. decennial census to divide the county into supervisorial districts.  In addition, H.B. 2416 enabled counties to redraw supervisorial district boundaries as of as deemed necessary between decennial censuses.  Presently, boards of supervisors are statutorily required to draw election precinct boundaries by December 1 of each year preceding a general election.  This legislation conforms the deadlines on boards of supervisors for drawing precinct boundaries and supervisorial district boundaries to December 1.

This legislation has no fiscal impact to the state general fund.

Provisions

1.      Extends the date by which county boards of supervisors must meet to set supervisorial district boundaries from June to December 1 following each release of U.S. census data.

2.      Contains an emergency clause.
