ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Phoenix, Arizona
REVISED
southern Arizona veterans’
home
Allows the Arizona Department of Veterans Services (ADVS) to acquire property for, and to construct and operate, a veterans’ home facility in southern Arizona. Appropriates $50,000 in FY 2001-2002 from the state general fund to ADVS.
Background
The
Arizona State Veterans’ Home Phoenix project was completed in November
1995. The 200 bed, skilled nursing
facility serves both veterans and their spouses. Construction funding is shared
between the federal government (65 percent) and state government (35 percent).
In
1998, there were 447,580 veterans living in Arizona. Of this number, 85,040 lived in Pima County. There is no veterans’ home for this
population. ADVS proposes to open the
southern Arizona veterans’ home facility to be located on the campus of the
Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in Tucson to be based on the Phoenix
facility. ADVS estimates the Tucson project to cost $14,189,390 based on the
cost for the Phoenix project. The state
share would be around $5,000,000.
This
legislation makes a $50,000 appropriation in FY 2001-2002 from the state
general fund to ADVS.
1. Allows ADVS to acquire property in order to construct and operate a veterans’ home facility in Tucson.
2. Makes a $50,000 appropriation in FY 2001-2002 from the state general fund to ADVS to begin negotiations with the federal government for the southern Arizona veterans’ home facility. Exempts the appropriation from lapsing.
3. Reverts monies that are unexpended and unencumbered on June 30, 2004 to the state general fund.
4. Provides for a general effective date.
