FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1009

juror pay

Purpose

Increases the current pay to jurors from $12.00 to $50.00 per day.

Background

Currently jurors are paid $12.00 for each day’s attendance in court, plus mileage. S.B. 1009 increases that payment to $50.00 for each day’s attendance. Attendance would include the first day a juror is required to attend and continue for each day until the juror is either temporarily or permanently excused. If a juror is excused on the first day of appearance, the juror will receive a mileage reimbursement only.

The Arizona Judicial Council projects this proposal would reduce the number of jurors who request dismissal due to financial hardship, and thereby increase participation and diversity.

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee estimates that the proposed increase to juror per diems will increase the Administrative Office of the Court’s Grand Jury expenditures approximately $32,300.00 in FY 2001-2002. Assuming jury days and number of juries remain constant, the County Supervisor’s Office projects an increase of $6,737,900.00 in FY 2001-2002. Information provided by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns shows a fiscal increase of $989,000.00 in FY 2001-2002.
