SB 1538 makes appropriations to the Department of Economic Security (DES) for the construction of Navajo senior centers.

Provisions

·                      Appropriates $1,000,000 from the state general fund in each of fiscal years (FY) 2001-02 and 2002-03 to the DES to be combined with $2,000,000 from the Navajo Nation for the construction of Navajo senior centers.

·                      Provides that the Navajo Nation shall develop a plan for the use of monies among the chapters so as to address the needs of half of the chapters in FY 2001-02 and the remaining chapters in FY 2002-03.

·                      Requires that the monies shall not be used for administrative costs.

·                      Exempts the appropriation from lapsing until June 30, 2004.

 

SB 1538 was amended in the Native American Affairs Committee as follows:

·                      Appropriates $1.5 million instead of $1 million in FY 2001-02, and $2.5 million instead of $2 million in FY 2002-03, to be combined with matching funds from the Navajo Nation for the construction of senior centers for Navajo Nation Chapters.

·                      Appropriates $400,000 from the state general fund in each of fiscal years 2001-02 and 2002-03 to the DES to be combined with matching funds from the Hopi Tribe for the construction of senior centers for the Hopi Tribe.

·                      Requires that the monies shall not be used for administrative costs.
