As Passed the House

SB 1223 makes various modifications to constables’ salaries, work records and training and establishes a Constables Ethics Committee.

History

Laws 2000, Chapter 237, Section 1 requires counties to redistrict on the first regularly scheduled meeting in June following the decennial census. A board of supervisors must hold public hearings throughout the county to discuss the proposed redistricting.

Currently certain states, including Arizona, must submit all changes in election law and procedures to the Federal Department of Justice as outlined in the Federal Voting Rights Act. All changes must be pre-cleared by the Justice Department to ensure that they do not violate race or minority status.

Provisions

·                      Changes the date that a county board of supervisors must meet to redraw its boundaries from the first regularly scheduled meeting in June to December 1.

·                      Contains an emergency clause.

The Counties & Municipalities Committee adopted the strike-everything amendment.

The strike-everything amendment to SB 1223 was adopted in the Committee of the Whole.
