SB 1192 expands the age of eligibility for participants in the mentoring program for young fathers.

History

Currently, mentoring and counseling services are provided to young fathers, ages 16 through 26, on a statewide basis. These services are contracted by the Department of Economic Security, which utilizes programs such as the Arizona Head Start Association, Chicanos por la Causa, the Southern Family Life Center and Family Resources, Inc. Program services include remedial education, high school or GED preparation, vocational training, job search and readiness, job placement and life skills training and mentoring. DES statistics indicate that in FY 1999-00, 263 persons participated in these programs.

Provisions

· Reduces the minimum age of eligibility of program participants from age 16 to age 14.

SB 1192 passed the Human Services Committee unamended.
