SB 1038 increases the allocation of monies from the medically needy account to the telemedicine pilot program.

History

The Arizona Telemedicine Program was created by members of the Arizona State Legislature in conjunction with staff of the University of Arizona in 1996.  The program was envisioned as a partnership of rural health care providers, state agencies, university scientists and physicians.  The program meets various goals and is recognized as one of the premier telemedicine programs in the nation.

In fiscal year 1999-2000, telemedicine pilot programs were allocated $250,000 from the tobacco tax and health care fund medically needy account.  SB 1038 increases the allocation to $500,000 for both fiscal years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.

Provisions

·                      Allocates $500,000 in FY 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 from the medically needy account for telemedicine programs designed to facilitate medical services in medically underserved areas.

·                      Specifies the allocation is subject to the availability of monies.

SB 1038 passed the Health Committee unamended.
