History

The 106th Congress passed S. 964 (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Equitable Compensation Act) which included the Navajo Electrification Demonstration Program.  The new law requires the Secretary of Energy to establish a five-year program for the purpose of assisting the Navajo Nation in meeting its electricity needs.  The goal of the program is to provide electrical power to every Navajo household that requests it by the year 2006.

 

Provisions

·                      Requests that the United States Congress support legislation to appropriate the funds necessary to implement the Navajo Electrification Demonstration Program.

·                      States that the funding necessary to support the legislation equals an appropriation of fifteen million dollars per year for a total of seventy-five million dollars between 2002 and 2006.
