HB 2549 provides a high school equivalency diploma to veterans over the age of 65 who have never received a high school diploma due to military service.

 

Provisions

·                      Provides a high school equivalency diploma to a person who has never obtained a high school diploma and meets the following requirements:

 

·                      Is at least sixty-five years of age;

 

·                      Currently resides in this state;

 

·                      Provides documented evidence that the person enlisted in the armed forces of the United States before completing high school in a public or a private school;

 

·                      Was honorably discharged from service with the armed forces of the United States.

 

HB 2549 was amended in the Military, Veteran Affairs and Aviation Committee as follows:

 

·        Requires the diploma received to be an honorary diploma;

 

·        Requires that the evidence of being enlisted in the Armed Forces of the United States be obtained from the Arizona Department of Veterans Services.

 

HB 2549 was amended in the Education Committee as follows:

 

·        Requires a five year window for rules to be adopted and diplomas to be issued.
