HB 2525
establishes the Indian Education Advisory Board with the purpose of studying
issues regarding the academic performance of Native American students in this
state.
Provisions
·Establishes the Indian Education Advisory Boardconsisting of the following members:
·The superintendent of public instruction.
·The Speaker of the House, the chairperson of the House
Education Committee, and a Speaker appointed person who is a member of the
Navajo Nation, and is not a member of the same political party as the
chairperson of the House Education Committee.
·The President of the Senate, the chairperson of the
Senate Education Committee, and a Senate President appointed person who is a
member of the Navajo Nation, and is not a member of the same political party as
the chairperson of the Senate Education Committee.
·The superintendent of each school district within this
state that is located within the Navajo Nation.
·One person appointed by the House Speaker, who
represents a college or university and who has a demonstrated interest in the
educational status of Native American children.
·One person appointed by the President of the Senate,
who represents a college or university and who has a demonstrated interest in
the educational status of Native American children.
·One person appointed by the Speaker of the house, who
represents alternative education programs and who has a demonstrated interest
in the educational status of Native American Children.
·One person appointed by the President of the Senate,
who represents charter schools and who has a demonstrated interest in the
educational status of Native American Children.
·Provides that
the appointed members’ term will expire in two years.
·Authorizes the Advisory board to conduct hearings, to
study the educational issues of Native American students and to recommend
changes that will improve the academic performance of those students.
·Requires the Advisory Board to submit a written report
of its recommendations to the superintendent of public instruction.
·States that the members are eligible to receive
reimbursement of expenses for work related to the advisory Board.
·Establishes that the program sunsets on July 1,
2011.
