HB 2521 modifies various state agency mandates relating to the Arizona Mexico commission.

History

The Arizona Mexico commission was established in 1959 by Arizona governor Paul J. Fannin. The commission consists of ten working committees who formulate programs and action items relating to issues that impact the Arizona-Mexico relationship.

Currently the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Economic Security, Environmental Quality, Health Services and Transportation have mandates that allow for collaboration with the Arizona Mexico commission in the gathering of data in the State of Sonora.

The Arizona Mexico commission collaborates with public and private sector leaders to initiate and implement binational projects for the residents of the Arizona-Mexico border region.

Provisions

·                      Allows the following agencies to cooperate with the Arizona Mexico commission on issues that relate to quality of life, trade and economic development of this state and enhance the economic competitiveness of the entire Arizona-Mexico region:

Ø      Department of Agriculture

Ø      Department of Transportation

Ø      Department of Health Services

Ø      Department of Environmental Quality

Ø      Department of Corrections

Ø      Department of Commerce

Ø      Department of Public Safety

Ø      Department of Game and Fish

Ø      Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System

Ø      Arizona Office of Tourism

HB 2521 passed the Public Institutions and Rural Affairs Committee unamended.
