As Transmitted to the Governor

House Bill 2486 increases the maximum allowable length for recreational vehicles (including front to rear bumpers) to forty-five feet.

History

Unless otherwise specified, current statute prescribes a maximum length of forty feet (front bumper to rear bumper) for vehicles.  According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), motor homes are not subject to federal length requirements regardless of whether the vehicle is used as a private passenger vehicle or for commercial purposes.  Consequently, length limitations on such vehicles are set by the individual states.  According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), there are 31 states that allow RV’s a maximum length of 45 feet, 1 state allows 42 feet in length and 18 states allow 40 feet in length.

Provisions

·                      Establishes the maximum allowable length of a recreational vehicle at 45 feet.

·                      Defines “recreational vehicle” for the purposes of the length exception to mean: a motor home designed to provide temporary living quarters for recreational, camping or travel use and built on or permanently attached to a self-propelled motor vehicle chassis or on a chassis cab or van that is an integral part of the completed vehicle.
