House Bill 2446 expands the vehicle license tax and registration fee exemption to include any member of the United States armed forces who receives orders to report for active military duty outside the state of Arizona.

History

Laws 2000, Chapter 343 exempts members of the United States armed forces, including members of the national guard or reserve unit from vehicle license tax and registration fees for one year, for no more than two vehicles if called to active military duty outside the state of Arizona in support of a worldwide contingency operation of the United States armed forces.  Laws 1991, Chapter 107 exempts members of the armed forces serving in Operation Desert Storm from VLT and registration fees for one year for no more than two vehicles.

Provisions

·                      Expands the vehicle license tax and registration fee exemption to include members of the United States armed forces who receives orders to report to active military duty outside the state of Arizona.

·                      Requires that the applicant provide a copy of the military’s orders as evidence of being ordered to report to active military duty outside of this state, in order to qualify for the exemption.

HB 2446 was amended in the Military, Veterans’ Affairs and Aviation Committee as follows:

·                      Strikes language that restricted the vehicle license tax and registration fee exemption to military personnel reporting for active duty outside of this state.

·                      Allows military personnel to qualify for the VLT and registration fee exemption regardless of where they report for duty provided the assigned duty is outside of Arizona.
