HB 2399 establishes the After School and Summer Pregnancy Prevention Pilot Program for grades 4-10 within DES.

 

The Human Services Committee adopted a strike-everything amendment to HB 2399 as follows:

·                      States that an adult probation officer or a surveillance officer who supervises certain caseloads may carry a firearm while on duty to protect the officer from death or serious bodily harm if the officer has met the following conditions:

·                      Completes at least 40 hours of firearms training from a firearms instructor certified by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (Board).

·                      Completes all Board required firearms re-certification training.

·                      Meets the minimum statutory qualifications for a peace officer.

·                      States that firearms certification and re-certification training shall not exceed the requirements for officers of the Department of Public Safety.

·                      Requires each probation department to provide firearms certification and re‑certification training for its' officers.

·                      Allows a probation department to utilize existing funds to supplement or pay the entire cost of firearms training.  Any funds expended for firearms training shall not reduce the amount of monies utilized for salaries of the officers.

·                      States that each probation department shall provide officers with credentials, which  the officer shall possess while on duty.

·                      Requires each probation department to determine the type of firearm and ammunition to be carried by the department's officers.

·                      States that any officer who chooses to carry a firearm while on duty shall purchase the firearm and holster.

·                      Requires each probation department to provide the officer any ammunition necessary for the performance of the officer's duties, personal protection, safety and firearms certification and re-certification training.

 

HB 2399 was withdrawn from the Education and Appropriations Committee.
