HB 2396 creates a pilot program for two schools to install a classical music program into their schools.

 

Provisions

·        Appropriates $500,000 from the state general fund in fiscal year 2001-2002 to the Department of Education in order to carry out the pilot program.

 

·        Creates a two-year classical music education pilot program that requires two schools, one in a county with over 500,000 people and one in a county with less than 500,000 people to participate.

 

·        Requires monies distributed from the classical music education account for the following purposes:

Þ    To purchase classical musical instruments for every pupil who is enrolled at the school;

Þ    To play prerecorded classical music in classrooms and hallways where appropriate;

Þ    To hire two full-time classical music teachers.

 

·        Requires the Department of Education to submit a report by December 15, 2003 to the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Governor that summarizes the results of the pilot program.

 

·        Repeals this act from and after December 31, 2003.

 

HB 2396 has passed the Education Committee amended as follows:

 

·        Clarifies that instruments purchased by the school will remain property of the school.
