HB 2356 expands AHCCCS liability for eligible Native Americans.
Currently in Arizona, when an uninsured person enters an emergency room, it is the county’s responsibility to determine if that person is eligible for AHCCCS. Upon determination of eligibility, AHCCCS is responsible for payment of health care retroactive 48 hours. For example, if a person enters the hospital on March 2 and the county finds the person eligible on March 10, AHCCCS pays for the two days prior to the date that the county deemed the person eligible. HB 2356 requires AHCCCS to pay for care that is provided before the date in which a county determines a Native American, who resides on a reservation, eligible.
