HB 2297 appropriates $5.4 million from the state general fund in each of the FYs 2001-02 and 2002-03 to the Department of Economic Security (DES) for the construction of buildings for TANF services on the Navajo Nation.

 

Provisions

·                      Appropriates $5.4 million from the state general fund in each of the FYs 2001-02 and 2002-2003 to DES.

·                      Stipulates that the appropriated monies be used for the construction of offices for the Navajo Nation to provide TANF services in Chinle, Fort Defiance and Newlands in Apache County, in Tuba City and Kayenta in Coconino County and in Dilkon in Navajo County.

·                      Conditions the appropriations on all of the following:

·                      Requires the approval by the United States Department of Health and Human Services through two methods.

·                      Withdrawal of land by the Navajo Nation for each office site, where applicable.

·                      Co-location of state financial assistance employees at each office site.

·                      Stipulates that if the appropriated monies are to be used for the construction or leasing of offices, the Navajo Nation and DES shall submit the estimated costs and other related information to the Joint Committee on Capital Review or JLBC, respectively, for review before the expenditure of monies.

·                      Allows for any unexpended monies to be reallocated for any of the other offices.

·                      Exempts the appropriations from lapsing until June 30, 2004.

 

HB 2297 passed the Native American Affairs Committee unamended.
