HB 2273 increases the amount that counties are required to pay jurors for each day’s attendance in superior or justice court, from twelve to fifty dollars. The bill also stipulates that municipalities shall pay jurors at the same rate as counties.

History

Laws 1970, Chapter 124, set the dollar amount for which counties would be required to pay jurors at $12 per day. HB 2273 would increase that amount to fifty dollars.

Provisions

·                      Increases the amount that counties are required to pay superior or justice court jurors, from $12 to $50.

·                      Clarifies that municipalities shall pay jurors at the same rate as counties.

·                      Contains a delayed effective date of June 30, 2002.

·                      Contains other technical and conforming changes.

HB 2273 failed to pass the Counties and Municipalities Committee on 2/13/01.

On reconsideration HB 2273 was amended in the Counties & Municipalities Committee as follows:

·                     Raises the amount that counties are required to jurors from $12 to $45 and stipulates that the money shall only be paid to jurors who are employed and not paid by the juror’s employer.

·                     Eliminates the provision that requires cities and towns to pay their jurors in the same manner as counties.

HB 2273 was amended in the Judiciary Committee as follows:

·                     Stipulates that counties, cities, and towns must pay their jurors at least $20.
