graduated drivers; permit
requirements; waiver
House Bill 2168 allows the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) to waive the five month instruction permit requirement for a Class G driver’s license if the parent or legal guardian states the requirement imposes a hardship on the immediate family or prohibits the applicant from obtaining employment or attending extracurricular activities.
Laws 1999, Chapter 14, Section 12 allows persons under the age of eighteen to apply for a class G drivers license. Applicants qualify for a class G license if they are at least sixteen years of age and have either satisfactorily completed a driver education program that is approved by MVD or the parent or guardian certifies in writing that the applicant completed at least twenty-five hours of driving with at least five of those hours at night. A person who holds a class G driver license may apply for a class D license on or after the person’s eighteenth birthday, unless that person’s class G license is suspended for a moving civil traffic violation. Laws 2000, amended Chapter 14, Section 12 establishing a minimum level of driving experience by requiring applicants for a class G license hold an instruction permit for at least five months before qualifying for a class G license, except this requirement does not apply when the person has a currently valid driver’s license issued by another state.
