HB 2152 allows children born in specific time periods to be eligible for TANF benefits and appropriates $3,266,800 in FY 2001-2002 and $3,364,600 in FY 2002-2003 from the TANF block grant for this purpose.
The Temporary Aid to Needy Families program (TANF) provides block grant dollars to states to use to fund services that strengthen low-income families and help their children. Currently, any child born when the child's parent is receiving welfare benefits, during a voluntary interruption of benefits for less than five years or when a parent is temporarily ineligible because of noncompliance with a TANF requirement is ineligible for benefits under the TANF program. If a child were eligible during any of these time periods, the family would be eligible to receive $72 per month in cash assistance.
