HB 2108 will provide $1,000,000 from the state general fund in FY 2001-2002 for research on Parkinson’s disease.

History

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects an estimated 1-1.5 million Americans.  In 1999 a total of 355 reported deaths in Arizona were attributed to Parkinson's disease. 

Provisions

·                      Appropriates $1,000,000 from the state general fund in FY 2001-2002 to the disease control research fund.  The Disease Control Research Commission will establish a research contract through the procurement process.

·                      Exempts the appropriation from lapsing of appropriations.

 

HB 2108 was amended in the Health Committee as follows:

·        Appropriates $1,000,000 in FY 2002-2003 from the state general fund to the disease control research fund.

·        Modifies the language to allow the disease control research commission to establish one or more contracts.

·        Stipulates that before obtaining any research contract, the research or study to be conducted must first be reviewed and approved by an institutional review board in this state. 

·        Provides that no study or research shall use any substance, material or process prohibited by state or federal law.

·        Defines institutional review board.

·        Provides a severability clause.
