As Passed the House

HB 2074 requires presidential electors to cast their votes for the presidential and vice presidential candidates that they were elected to represent.  The bill also provides a procedure by which alternate electors can be designated.

History

Current Arizona law does not require electors to cast their votes for the candidates whom they were elected to represent.  Arizona is one of twenty-four states without this requirement.

Provisions

·                      Requires presidential electors to cast their votes at the meeting of the electoral college for the candidates that they were elected to represent.

·                      Requires the chairperson of the political party of electors who received the most votes to designate a substitute elector if the original elector fails or refuses to vote for the candidates the elector was elected to represent.

·                      Requires an independent presidential candidate whose party’s electors received the most votes to designate a substitute elector if the original elector fails or refuses to vote for the candidate the elector was elected to represent.

HB 2073 passed the Judiciary Committee unamended.
