Reestablishes the Joint Legislative Committee on Hunger to discuss and review issues regarding food security programs and services.

 

Background

Laws 1996, Chapter 352 established the Joint Legislative Committee on Hunger to serve as a public forum for the discussion of food security issues.

 

            Laws 1998, chapter 80, extended the Committee until December 31, 1999.  In the Department of Economic Security’s “Status of Hunger in Arizona 1999” report, the Hunger Advisory Council recommended the continuation of the Committee.

 

Provisions

·                      Reestablishes the 20-member Joint Legislative Committee on Hunger to serve as a public forum to discuss and review issues relating to food security services and programs and to ensure efficient and coordinated use of resources.

·                      Designates the members of the Committee.

·                      Establishes that the directors of the five designated state departments shall each appoint a representative to serve as an advisory member on the Committee.

·                      Prohibits state employees from serving as public members on the Committee.

·                      Requires at least five members to be involved in food assistance programs

·                      States that public members are not eligible for compensation, except for reimbursement of expenses.

·                      Requires the Legislature and participating departments to provide staff, administrative and technical support and meeting space to the Committee.

·                      Requires the Committee to submit a written report, by December 1 of each year, on its findings and recommendations to the Governor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the Senate, the Secretary of State and the Director of the Department of Library, Archives and Public Records.

·                      Extends the Committee through December 31, 2003.
