ON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE MADELENE VAN ARSDELL.
Madelene Van Arsdell passed away on January 3, 1997 at the age of seventy-eight.
A tireless advocate of civil rights and social change, Madelene Van Arsdell worked diligently to better the world around her through her efforts in various public service capacities. Appointed to Arizona's first Civil Rights Commission by Governor Sam Goddard in 1965, she won a seat in the state Senate in 1974 where she sponsored legislation to assist elderly and displaced homemakers. Madelene Van Arsdell's other political endeavors included service as a precinct committeewoman, district chairperson and delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980.
Madelene Van Arsdell selflessly donated her time, energy and abilities over the years to benefit organizations serving women, minorities, children and the elderly. Among her many accomplishments, she was founder and president emeritus of the Arizona Action for Displaced Homemakers, now known as the Center for New Directions. She served on the boards of the Arizona Consumers Council, the Arizona State Board of Nursing, the State Employment and Training Council, the Glendale Youth Center and the Community Behavioral Services Board. Madelene Van Arsdell also served as executive director of the Glendale Community Council, chairman of the state United Nations Week and board member of the United Nations Association of Greater Phoenix and the Phoenix Committee for UNICEF.
Dedicated to her family, Madelene Van Arsdell was preceded in death by her husband, Louis. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Karen and Ellen, her sons, James and Jeffrey, and her five grandchildren.

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:
That the Members of the Senate sincerely regret the passing of Madelene Van Arsdell and extend their sympathies and condolences to her surviving family members.
